Oyajakuta Prize
The Oyajakuta Prize is an internationally awarded, African judged prize for the ouevre of writers, usually novelists, but not exclusively, who have produced a work or works of superlative beauty and transformative effect in their literary career. It will usually be awarded to two writers, one female, one male on the basis of literary esteem with particular attention to the elegance, lyricism, directness and/or innovativeness of their style, thought and its transformative impact in the world; it shall consist of two parts: the boughs (OJA), acknowledging a forest of people, and the two medallists or laureates, describe them as you wish at present though laureate is preferred. There is no direct cash reward for the certain high regard in which we hold the winners, and the great and good are invited to bless the laureates and their endeavours through purchase of their work; medallions and letters of acknowledgment will be given with names imprinted; we pray this endeavour shall endure. The first medallions are awarded to the following luminaries of African literature for their inestimable contribution to Africa’s literary heritage and its vitality in the 20th and 21st centuries, those we commend and give boughs to for the year 2022 are listed below; the medallists or laureates, as you wish are designated by the word (Oya).
